New Wave planting was pioneered by the Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf. He places emphasis on the natural harmony of plants, as well as their form and texture.  This is a planting trend about plants that perform, that do not require staking and that provide a long season of interest.  The main plants in this palette are perennials and grasses, but there is a backbone of shrubs too.
