There are loads of different sizes of pots available to purchase plants in. Pot sizes are usually described in litres. There can be a huge difference in prices of plants in each pot size so it is worth considering what you actually want from your plant before you buy.  If you are looking for instant impact, you might choose a larger more expensive plant (and you might choose to wait for the bare root season) but if you are buying perennials, it is always worth buying small as these grow quickly and the extra size is not always worth the extra money.  Read more »

9cm or 1 litre Pots

Small in size, this is the best size to buy most perennials.  If planted in the spring growing season, they will overtake the maturity and size of  a 2 litre plant within only a couple of months.  Smaller plants tend to establish better, as they put on strong roots - and they tend to be 1/3 cheaper!  9cm plants are not always available in garden centres, but they are worth buying if you find them.   Read more »

2 Litre Pots

The most popular size of pot in which plants are sold, the majority of plants sold by garden centres will be in 2 litre pots.  Plants will be relatively small in size but 2 litre perennials will be big enough to make a descent display when planted in the garden. 4 litre Pots

Perennial Plants sold in 10 Litre pot sizes are often described as 'specimen plants'.  Small trees  and shrubs are also sold in 10L containers.  A 10L plant will come in a pot with dimensions of 280mm diameter x 225mm depth.  Read more »
